Republican National Committee v. Mi Familia Vota
U.S. Supreme Court (from the 9th Circuit), No. 25-1017
Where it stands
Cert. granted June 29, 2026. Respondents' merits briefs were due Oct. 13, 2026.
Next up, Dec 8, 2026
Oral argument.
The question
Does the National Voter Registration Act, or a 2018 consent decree, bar Arizona from requiring documentary proof of citizenship on its state voter-registration form? And does the NVRA bar Arizona from cancelling noncitizens' registrations within 90 days of a federal election?
Why it matters
The ruling will set how far states can go in verifying citizenship and cleaning voter rolls under federal law. The Ninth Circuit held that the NVRA preempts Arizona's rules. The petition says the Court has already granted emergency stays on each issue, one in this case and one in a Fourth Circuit case.
